I love playing miniature golf, and the Pocket Mini Golf by Momentum Games is no exception! While there are numerous golf games available, I am really impressed with the experience this game provides.

The game is cartnoonish in appearance, but the graphics are very smooth & fast, and the game is very much suited for adult play. You can choose from four players - Ty, Rika, Marco and Emily (no difference in their skill level) - and from two levels of difficulty - Beginner and Expert. Par is much lower in Expert mode, increasing the challenge to the game.

You can also select a Game Type - Normal, Arcade and Practice. Arcade puts a twist on the game by putting a time limit on each hole. Instead of worrying about Par, you get as many strokes as it takes to sink the ball as quickly as possible. Practice is just that...

There are three 18-hole courses (Easy, Medium and Hard). You must begin with the Easy course, and upon completing that (with a score of Par or better, mind you!), the Medium course is unlocked for play. Same thing for the Medium course, however you can only play the Hard course on the Expert Difficulty level!

Putting involves three simple steps:

    1. First use your stylus to aim the dotted line in the direction you wish to putt.
    2. After you have your line aimed, tap on the player and the "power bar' appears. You then move the color bar to the level of power that you want to use for the stroke.
    3. Lastly, you tap the player again, and they putt the ball.

One mistake I made several times was touching too close to the player on step #1, and the Power Bar would appear, yet I did not correctly aim! Hence, the aim could be off by 180 degrees, and I would have to putt and live with a horrible shot! I wish there were an option to go back a step, but I could not find one.

When you are in Expert Mode, the Power Bar moves back & forth automatically, and you have to tap on the Bar when it is where you'd like. This adds a nice level of difficulty to shooting!

Button options

Before each shot, four "buttons" appear at the bottom of the screen. The following image shows those options, then I'll expound on them.

  • The Flag - Some of the holes are long or angled in such a way that you can't see the pin in your normal view. If you tap-and-hold on the Flag button, the screen will temporarily move to the pin, giving you an idea of the shot.
  • The Body - Tap-and-hold on this button and your player will temporarily disappear. This helps if the player is blocking your view for aiming the ball.
  • Rotate - With each tap of this button, you will be rotated 90 degrees around the hole. This allows you to choose the view that best suits you for aiming.
  • The House - This pauses the game and also lets you go to Game Options, Exit altogether, or Save and Quit.

The sound track to the game is peppy and I like the "dancing" graphics, but if that is not to your liking, those options (and more) are adjustable in the Options menu. You can adjust Volume, Sound Effects, Menu Music, Game Music, Control Method, Falling Text and Touch Screen Icons.
Control Method changes from Method One to Method Two, though I could not find out what the difference was, and there is no Help File.

Despite the lack of a Help menu, I could not find anything negative to report about this game. It is a blast to play, and at $12.99, it is reasonably priced. You can purchase Pocket Mini Golf here.

If you enjoy this game, be sure to check out Pocket Mini Golf Extra. It is a new add-on pack. It has 3 all new 18 hole courses to challenge even the best Pocket Mini Golf players. As well as 3 new courses there are 18 secret levels to discover and play... that makes a total of 72 new levels! With the original courses included you will have a whopping 126 unique levels to perfect. Characters have different strengths and weaknesses so that courses present a different challenge depending on who you pick. This also adds a new dimension to the original PMG courses.

This game is also available for the Windows Mobile Smartphone!
