Omega One Mobile Solutions has released a number of useful utilities like journal Bar and Battery Pack. Now, they’ve added a slick little calculator to their product mix.

1-Calc is a multi-function calculator that should meet the needs of most users. Entering an already crowded field, Omega One has found a nice mix of functionality that makes this a real bargain at $9.99!

With such a wide selection of commercial and free calculators out there, you can be really picky when selecting one to load into your PocketPC. This one stands out with its clean design and flexible configurations.

In its standard configuration, the calculator provides basic math functions plus memory. With a simple touch of the green down-arrow, a menu opens to present you with other layouts for algebra, trigonometry, base conversions, unit conversions, currency conversions, statistics, and even a selection of constants (who can ever remember the proper value for the Stefan-Boltzmann constant?)

How about a conversion between US and UK men’s shirt sizes or US to European men’s underwear sizes? Of course, there’s all the usual conversions for speed, mass, temperature, etc. The well thought-out interface is what makes this special. You select a conversion group (such as Pressure) and then two other pull-down selectors allow you to configure the conversions to the exact pair that you need to work with.

The implementation of currency conversions has a very nice automatic update feature. Every time you connect your PocketPC to its cradle, the program downloads the latest data from the Internet for over 50 currencies! This has been a frustrating omission from other currency converters.

Still not convinced? How about customizable button layouts so you can produce a calculator that meets your needs exactly? You can select between large and small buttons. You can even develop your own skins.

Wish List

OK – it does just about everything, so what’s missing? Looking back over my many years of calculator use in engineering and business applications, I’d like to see some finance functions such as interest rates, loan calculations and time value of money functions. And for us HP geeks, the ability to switch between algebraic and RPN would be really sweet.

Conclusion

It’s fast, it’s bargain-priced, and it meets the needs of most users. You can even download a trial version to see it for yourself. It’s a winner.
